4"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Invention of Braille<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The last class focused\u00a0heavily\u00a0on typography, we\u00a0learned\u00a0about the invention of the printing press,\u00a0display typefaces, and\u00a0typography in\u00a0art.\u00a0But\u00a0we didn&#8217;t learn that much about\u00a0how\u00a0type\u00a0and even just\u00a0literacy\u00a0have developed\u00a0in\u00a0visually\u00a0impaired\u00a0people\u00a0so\u00a0I\u00a0chose to do my blog post on\u00a0Braille\u00a0and the invention of\u00a0Braille\u00a0its cultural impact\u00a0was\u00a0incredibly\u00a0significant\u00a0and\u00a0I\u00a0would argue that it still counts as a type of typography.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Culture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Braille\u00a0was invented by\u00a0Louis\u00a0Braille\u00a0in\u00a01824\u00a0when he was only\u00a015\u00a0years old.\u00a0It was a modified version of something the military was already using to allow people to read communications with no\u00a0light.\u00a0This invention allowed visually impaired people to read which was something nearly unimaginable to\u00a0the community\u00a0up to this point.\u00a0Louis\u00a0Braille\u00a0invented himself was\u00a0blind.\u00a0Even though this was a world-changing invention it would not be adopted universally until 1932.\u00a0Braille\u00a0has since been adapted for many languages besides\u00a0English\u00a0around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img \/><figcaption>https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Braille-writing-system<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typography<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Braille as a\u00a0type is\u00a0fascinating.\u00a0It\u00a0is written from right to left using a slate and\u00a0read\u00a0from left to right.\u00a0The\u00a0slate uses\u00a02\u00a0metal plates with cell-sized holes that you\u00a0punch with a poking tool to create\u00a0each\u00a0letter\u00a0and then the paper is flipped so the raised parts are on the top.\u00a0A cell\u00a0is one letter, which is made using a maximum of six\u00a0raised\u00a0dots.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"463\" \/><figcaption>https:\/\/www.aph.org\/product\/pocket-braille-slate-pins-up-clear-plastic-with-large-handle-stylus\/<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Each\u00a0letter of the alphabet plus\u00a0punctuation is represented with these\u00a0dots.\u00a0When\u00a0red, all one does is run your fingers along these cells distinguishing each letter.\u00a0Even\u00a0though it is usually representing\u00a0English\u00a0it is truly a unique language in and of itself.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"312\" doing this research I didn&#8217;t really have any idea how braille worked or how it was read.
