Largely self-taught, Homer started his career working as a commercial\u00a0illustrator.\u00a0He later took up\u00a0oil painting\u00a0and produced major studio works characterized by the weight and density he used from the medium. I found this painting interesting because the subject is an African American man, which was pretty uncommon during that time.
