Snotty Nose Rez Kids – Rebirth (ft. Tanya Tagaq)

I’ve chosen this video by the Snotty Nose Rez Kids as something that inspires me because it speaks a lot to the hardships my ancestors and family have faced over the generations since colonial settler Canada was established. The lyrics touch on traditional practices prohibited by the Indian Act, a sense of resentment from the Indigenous communities about those restrictions, and steps that are being taken by Indigenous peoples of this generations to put their faces back on their territories – a culture revival – where being Indigenous isn’t viewed as being less than human, or something to be ashamed of (like my grandparents were raised to believe). Most importantly, I’m a huge fan of Tanya Tagaq’s throat-singing.
