Cavallini’s “The Last Judgement” <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pierto Cavallini was born in Rome in 1259. This is about all we know about his early and personal life. He was most known for painting The Last Judgement<\/em> for the church of Santa Cecelia in Trastevere, Rome. This fresco painting of the second coming of Christ is a good example of Roman naturalism. Cavallini’s <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

first works, however, was meant to be a restoration of a much older medieval piece for the Nave of San Paulo Fuori le Mura. He also worked often in mosaics, his first known mosaic was for the Santa Maria in Trastevre, Rome. He depicted scenes from the Virgin Mary’s life. In these works<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

we begin to see him saying goodbye to the more traditional, flat looking Byzantine style, and using a softer more life like method instead. Cavallini was one of the first artists to explore a newer, classical style in favor of the older, flatter gothic style. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
