The second news article, written by John Paul Tasker, titled “Andrew Scheer slams ‘terrible’ Liberal approach to safe injection sites”, for CBC News takes a political point of view on injection sites. This article was written before the 2019 Canadian election, reporting on the opioid crisis in Canada, and the view of the Conservative party. The article states that the Liberal party supports safe injection sites, and is planning to implement more, however, the Conservative’s are strongly against the sites and plan to reduce such harm reduction implementations. Andrew Scheer stated that he is concerned for the communities surrounding these sites with the risk that sites may bring more crime to the area, while he does want to reduce addiction, safe injection sites are not his plan. In Calgary, Alberta, there is evidence that safe injection sites and harm reduction plans can increase crime in the surrounding area. Andrew Scheer believes that safe injection sites maintain addictions, rather than reducing them. In 2011, the Conservative party made an attempt to shut down the Vancouver injection site, however, the Supreme Court of Canada decided against the Conservative’s attempt. Andrew Scheer said he respects the courts decision, however, he would plan on making a policy shift to the number of sites on his watch (Tasker).
