{"id":149,"date":"2021-11-17T06:12:29","date_gmt":"2021-11-17T06:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/carmenhuang\/?p=149"},"modified":"2021-11-17T06:25:29","modified_gmt":"2021-11-17T06:25:29","slug":"bright-lights-of-the-city-the-history-of-neon-lights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/carmenhuang\/2021\/11\/17\/bright-lights-of-the-city-the-history-of-neon-lights\/","title":{"rendered":"Bright Lights of the City &#8211; The History of Neon Lights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When we think about neon lights and cities that encompass these colourful illuminations, we often think about Las Vegas, Vancouver or\u00a0Hong Kong.\u00a0The bright personality of these lights has brought great history to these places and has made a significant impact in forming the cities into what they are\u00a0today.\u00a0But who created these glowing signs, and what is its\u00a0history?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Development of Lighting Technology <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the creation of neon lights may seem recent, the first discovery of neon light technology was founded in 1675 by French astronomer Jean\u00a0Picard.\u00a0While in the lab one day, Picard had discovered a faint glow in one of the mercury barometer tubes after it was\u00a0shaken.\u00a0This glow is known as a barometric light, however, this scientific knowledge was not understood at the\u00a0time.\u00a0Despite the unknown information, the discovery of the glow would later impact the creation of lighting and the many inventions of\u00a0illuminations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.france-pittoresque.com\/IMG\/jpg\/Jean-Picard.jpg\" alt=\"12 juillet 1682 : d\u00e9c\u00e8s de l&#039;astronome Jean Picard\" width=\"837\" height=\"1099\" \/><figcaption>Jean Picard was a French astronomer in the 17th century who aided the creation of electrical lights with his discovery of barometric light. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france-pittoresque.com\/spip.php?article5995\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.france-pittoresque.com\/spip.php?article5995\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Image Source)<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Father of Neon Lights and Signs<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the 1850s rolled around, Heinrich Geissler and Julius Pl\u00fccker then created glowing glass tubes using the previously founded technology.\u00a0These were known as Geissler\u00a0tubes.\u00a0By combining air and other gasses in a glass tube, the pair created lighting that would later influence the production of neon signs made by Georges Claude in\u00a01910.\u00a0Using glass tubes similar to Geissler and Julius Pl\u00fccker\u2019s invention, Claude utilized neon gas instead of the previously used gases and applied an electrical discharge to the sealed neon tube.\u00a0This resulted in the first neon light being created, and it was shortly presented at a Paris Expo in the same\u00a0year.\u00a0By 1915, the invention was commercialized, and Claude was credited for the creation of neon\u00a0lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/JcUSTWs5Rha45ijMkP-ITQFCeaXjxeHOiDi8qFxmNl2sJxIXeJ4xoEU_SpOETTG8HX_u_bOuyL8542cHHp570VgR1a-3APR78e2nfj7rH6Uuf2OxHQOJahbMOcWS\" alt=\"WCSA - On This Day \u2013 January 19, 2019 \u2013 Georges Claude patents the neon  discharge tube for use in advertising, in 1915. - WCSA.WORLD\" width=\"842\" height=\"449\" \/><figcaption>Learning from the invention of Gessier tubes, Claudes went on to enhance this development with his development of neon lights. <a href=\"http:\/\/wcsa.world\/news\/world-almanac-event-academy\/wcsa-on-this-day-january-19-2019-georges-claude-patents-the-neon-discharge-tube-for-use-in-advertising-in-1915\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/wcsa.world\/news\/world-almanac-event-academy\/wcsa-on-this-day-january-19-2019-georges-claude-patents-the-neon-discharge-tube-for-use-in-advertising-in-1915\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(Image Source)<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As 1923 approached, the discovery of neon lights was soon introduced to the U.S. after Claude sold two of his signs to the motoring company Packard Motors in Los&nbsp;Angelos.&nbsp;The company used the lights as a form of advertisement as they were bright and attracted customers both in the day and&nbsp;evening.&nbsp;Because of this reason, many were drawn to the illuminating character neon drew to the city, and soon neon lights grew in popularity and were used on many&nbsp;storefronts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While neon lights gained an uprise in the early 1900s, a global economic downturn changed this in the\u00a01970s.\u00a0Due to the longevity use of the lights and bulbs needed to be repaired, the once futuristic look began to look dull, and store owners no longer saw the value in the neon signs as they once\u00a0did.\u00a0Due to this, it caused a decline in its usage and neon lights soon began to go out of\u00a0style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Neon Lights Today and its Impact<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neon lights are still present in modern-day society, often existing as decorations inside restaurants, offices and even\u00a0houses.\u00a0Although neon signs are now made with LED, the invention of neon is still\u00a0influential.\u00a0From paving new ways of advertisement in the early 1900s, to adding vibrant bright colours to the cities they were\u00a0in,\u00a0neon lights revolutionized the way we see lights and the different uses that can stem from\u00a0it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vmcdn.ca\/f\/files\/glaciermedia\/import\/lmp-all\/1418776-istock-544322962.jpg;w=960\" alt=\"The historic past of some of Metro Vancouver&#039;s last standing neon signs -
