This is what started the \u2018sakoku\u2019 period in Japanese history. This policy came about as a result of years of the Nobunaga and Hideyoshi regimes warding off Christianity and Christian influence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to this, Japan had been trading with a few European countries. However, Shogun Ieyasu eventually came to see Christian missionaries as a threat to his regime. In 1612, he issued a decree prohibiting the religion. Over the next years, Ieyasu took measures to eradicate Christianity from Japan, resulting in the 1935 order that forbade Japanese people from making overseas trips.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/catherinerosales\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13291\/2021\/10\/Shiba_Kokan_A_meeting_of_Japan_China_and_the_West_late_18th_century-879x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-77\" width=\"488\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/catherinerosales\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13291\/2021\/10\/Shiba_Kokan_A_meeting_of_Japan_China_and_the_West_late_18th_century-258x300.jpeg 258w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/catherinerosales\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13291\/2021\/10\/Shiba_Kokan_A_meeting_of_Japan_China_and_the_West_late_18th_century-768x894.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/catherinerosales\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13291\/2021\/10\/Shiba_Kokan_A_meeting_of_Japan_China_and_the_West_late_18th_century-1319x1536.jpeg 1319w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/catherinerosales\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13291\/2021\/10\/Shiba_Kokan_A_meeting_of_Japan_China_and_the_West_late_18th_century-1759x2048.jpeg 1759w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After this ban, the only people allowed to trade with Japan were the Dutch and Chinese, but they could only do so in Nagasaki.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though Japanese citizens weren\u2019t allowed to leave the country during this period of time, they weren\u2019t completely unaware of what was going on in the rest of the world. Given how the Dutch were still allowed to trade with them, they started translating Dutch books into Japanese, in the late 1700s.
