The third phase of my mentorship project consisted of me showing the logo I had created over the weekend and getting some critique on how to make it better. Thankfully, there were just some small refinements to make and not structural problems. The fourth phase was just me executing out the refinements that my mentor advised me on.
Now that I\u2019ve reached the finish line for this mentorship project I can say while there were some bumps in the road and I still have work to do, I am happy with where I\u2019ve gotten. Some specific things I\u2019ve learned along the way were that research is the foundation from which you start generating ideas.
Spending\u00a0less\u00a0time\u00a0in\u00a0this\u00a0part\u00a0means\u00a0that\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0have\u00a0less\u00a0to\u00a0work\u00a0from\u00a0later\u00a0on.\u00a0When\u00a0I\u00a0tried\u00a0to\u00a0spend\u00a0less\u00a0time\u00a0in\u00a0this\u00a0area\u00a0my\u00a0ideation\u00a0notably\u00a0suffered,\u00a0and\u00a0my\u00a0situation\u00a0was\u00a0not\u00a0dire enough to\u00a0make\u00a0that\u00a0trade-off.\u00a0I\u00a0still\u00a0could\u00a0afford\u00a0the\u00a0time\u00a0to\u00a0do\u00a0the\u00a0research. Additionally,\u00a0I\u00a0
didn\u2019t\u00a0have\u00a0to\u00a0use\u00a0all\u00a0the\u00a0research,\u00a0as\u00a0I\u00a0moved\u00a0forward\u00a0I\u00a0could\u00a0just\u00a0focus\u00a0on\u00a0what\u00a0made\u00a0sense\u00a0
for\u00a0the\u00a0project.
Additionally, I also learned to keep in mind the context of my project. I was making a logo, so the connection to the company had been clear, as clients weren\u2019t going to see the rationale. Abstraction sometimes is the right solution but you have to make sure it still reads!
This project also corroborated the idea that the devil is in the details! For me, design takes a lot of time (but I have gotten faster since I started!). I\u2019ve found that it was a good strategy to overestimate a little bit on how much time something would take me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aside\u00a0from\u00a0all\u00a0the\u00a0specific\u00a0design\u00a0help\u00a0that\u00a0both\u00a0my\u00a0mentors\u00a0gave\u00a0me,\u00a0I\u00a0think\u00a0I\u00a0really\u00a0benefited\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0get\u00a0to\u00a0talk\u00a0and\u00a0work\u00a0with\u00a0other\u00a0industry\u00a0professionals\u00a0outside\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0IDEA\u00a0faculty.\u00a0It\u00a0corroborated\u00a0a\u00a0lot\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0things\u00a0that\u00a0instructors\u00a0had\u00a0told\u00a0me\u00a0about\u00a0the\u00a0industry, which\u00a0has\u00a0put\u00a0my\u00a0mind\u00a0to\u00a0ease,\u00a0at\u00a0least\u00a0a\u00a0little\u00a0bit.
Overall, I think I would give myself a 7.5 or 8 out of 10. I think there are still things that could be made better, but I am happy with the progress I made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think one of the things I found most rewarding about this project is that I focused on something that I know is a weak spot for me. I still think I struggle with logos, but this semester in particular, I\u2019ve done a lot more logos and the help I got on this project has made me feel more comfortable with them.
