Robert Gage was an influential art Director with the DDB Worldwide advertising agency and a director of well-known television ads. He was born on May 30th,<\/sup> 1921, in Providence, R.I. He studied art and design when he was young, all while working in a bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His advertising career started at the Abbott Kimball Company and continued at Grey Advertising under its creative director, Bill Birnbach. He then joined the New York firm as the Art Director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gage has won numerous industry awards for print advertising with bold intuitive use of typography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robert Gage was equally skilled with photography and television specializing in filming commercials. He directed well-known characters like Mikey and his brothers for Life cereal, and actors like Jack Gilford, who appeared in Cracker Jack commercials, and Laurence Oliver, in commercials for the Polaroid SX70 camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Gage also hired art directors who themselves became giants in the field: George Lois, Helmut Krone, Bill TaubinA and Gene Federico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1972, when the Art Directors Hall of Fame was established, Mr. Gage was the first art director in advertising to be inducted. He retired in 1992 and later passed away at 78.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
