Paolo Uccello was a very talented Florentine painter and mathematician from the early Renaissance. He was notable for his advanced work with perspective in paintings. It was said that he would stay up all night to grasp a deeper understanding of perspective –which I find, as a young artist, very relatable, seeing as I tend to pull all-nighters attempting to understand a concept. He used perspective to convey a feeling of depth within his paintings and to narrate different stories within the painting itself, which at the time, was something brand new. He also blended the decorative style of the late Gothic period with the heroic style of the early Renaissance, which is evident in some of his pieces.

His work became a model for newer artists, for he was one of the first artists who created illusions of space in order to enhance the realism of their paintings. I love how depth in the paintings really bring his pieces to life and the colours that Uccello used. A lot of his paintings were quite dark, so when colour was added, it was very vibrant against the black of the backgrounds, emphasizing the main figures in the foreground.
