Art history is rich with fascinating characters and stories. We glorify their work and often idealize them as characters without examining how they lived their lives. I designed my InVision board to highlight three famous artistic masters and their less savory activities throughout history. The stories exemplify how male privilege, social status, and talent actively played a role in the lives of these men.
With my mood board, I attempted to show the brilliant work of Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Bernini while also sharing stories about their problematic behaviour. I wanted to design an experience that might rebalance the audience’s perspective of the famous artists, allowing them to be seen both as highly influential masters and profoundly flawed or even unlikeable people.
I spent about 5 hours on this project. Trying to push the boundaries of the brief to cover a topic I feel passionate about was challenging. I might have given myself a higher grade for playing it safe and adhering more closely to the brief, but overall I’m glad I tried to push the limits. I’d give myself 8.5/10.
