IDES 141 Typography Zine Rationale

For my typography zine I chose to research Louis XIV. I am actually pretty satisfied with how my project turned out, because I struggled with creating my design at the beginning. Since I had never heard of a zine before, I was confused as to how they were structured. After looking at all the examples, I had a better idea of how a zine should look, and it really helped me with blocking out my own research in the design.

The colour choices in my zine are based on royalty. I mainly chose rich shades of red, purple, and yellow. I wanted to portray a royal theme to represent Louis XIV as he was a king.

I also chose to illustrate elements and print certain examples to represent different information. I illustrated most of my elements by drawing them on a separate piece of paper using colouring pencils, but the sun on the front and back cover is painted.

The printed examples are black and white; there are three. I chose to print the example of the typeface and the example of the book because I felt that it would be more informative this way. Those are two examples that are important to see realistically.

To display important facts I bolded my information. There is a bolded fact on each page.

Overall I definitely think zines are a fun way to present research, but it’s not something I would be enthusiastic to do again. I didn’t like designing it that much. I am happy with the topic I chose, as it was really interesting to learn about.

I give myself a 7/10. I didn’t give myself full marks because I think I could have made it better; my design could be more engaging and the information (writing) could be neater. My design meets the brief as I have a front and back cover; an interesting title on the front cover; the back cover sums up the facts; there are 6 clear facts throughout the zine; I used colour; I incorporated my name in the design; and I used a combination of mediums.
