{"id":164,"date":"2020-10-23T00:16:57","date_gmt":"2020-10-23T00:16:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/claricemah\/?p=164"},"modified":"2020-10-23T00:16:57","modified_gmt":"2020-10-23T00:16:57","slug":"survey-6-must-have-toys-from-the-early-1900s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/claricemah\/2020\/10\/23\/survey-6-must-have-toys-from-the-early-1900s\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey 6: MUST-HAVE Toys from the early 1900s"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You weren\u2019t a normal child if you never played with toys.\u00a0 That, or your parents hated you (sorry).\u00a0 Toys are spark imagination.\u00a0 Which is why so many people owned them, and so many still do.\u00a0 They are objects that bring joy.\u00a0 Apparently, they were popular in the early 1900s too.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Toy gods<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My toy god was Mattel.\u00a0 I was a huge Barbie lover, and I secretly still am.\u00a0 However, Mattel wasn\u2019t founded until 1945.\u00a0 There were several well-established businesses flourished in Britain at the start of the 20th century:\u00a0 G&amp;J Lines of London, successful since the 1870s; JK Farnell, known for manufacturing soft toys;\u00a0 William Britains, known for making sets of toy soldiers; Chad Valley known for making board games; and WJ Bassett-Lowke, the firm that brought detail accuracy in model trains.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hips.hearstapps.com\/bpc.h-cdn.co\/assets\/16\/40\/1475859258-christmas-toys-by-decade.jpg\" alt=\"52 Most Popular Gifts &amp; Toys for Kids in Every Decade - Christmas Toy Gift  Ideas 2018\" \/><figcaption>A timeline of toys<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestproducts.com\/parenting\/kids\/g1997\/most-popular-gifts-toys-each-year\/\"> https:\/\/www.bestproducts.com\/parenting\/kids\/g1997\/most-popular-gifts-toys-each-year\/<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New toy trends<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Two toys emerged successfully in the early 1900s, the first new toys to be popularized since the end of the Victorian era.\u00a0 These toys were the Meccano and the teddy bear.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Engineering for boys, but what about girls?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/__data\/assets\/image\/0008\/248867\/meccano-construction-set-no.1,-meccano-ltd,-england,-1920-29.jpg\" alt=\"Meccano Construction Set No.1, Meccano Ltd England, 1920-29 copyright Victoria and Albert Museum\" width=\"576\" height=\"433\" \/><figcaption>Meccano, a toy designed for boy&#8217;s interest in mechanical engineering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/moc\/collections\/must-have-toys-1900-1919\/\">https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/moc\/collections\/must-have-toys-1900-1919\/<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of the industrial advances from the 19th century, educators realized it was important to encourage technical training in young men. In 1899, Frank Hornby designed Meccano in efforts to encourage his son to be interested in mechanical engineering.\u00a0 I find it very interesting that the toy was targeted to boys.\u00a0 Girls could be interested in mechanical engineering too.\u00a0 Meccano\u2019s purpose should have been to stimulate all children\u2019s minds&#8211; not just boys.\u00a0 Unfortunately,\u00a0 educational toys being geared solely to boys was an ongoing trend for a long time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cuddly Wuddly was a bear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everybody I know owns a teddy bear.\u00a0 Did you ever wonder where they came from?\u00a0 In 1902, Richard Steiff designed the first soft toy jointed bear:\u00a0 the teddy bear.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/__data\/assets\/image\/0009\/248868\/teddy-bear,-steiff,-germany,-1904-05,-copyright-victoria-and-albert-museum.jpg\" alt=\"Must Have Toys 1900-1919 - V&amp;A Museum of Childhood Victoria and Albert  Museum\" width=\"579\" height=\"679\" \/><figcaption>The first teddy bear <br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/moc\/collections\/must-have-toys-1900-1919\/\">https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/moc\/collections\/must-have-toys-1900-1919\/<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Where did the teddy part of the name come from, you ask?&nbsp; Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States, was also known as Teddy.&nbsp; In 1902,&nbsp; President Roosevelt was out on a bear hunt in Mississippi, but he couldn\u2019t find any bears.&nbsp; His staff ended up bringing him a small cub they found to shoot, but he refused.&nbsp; A Washington Post newspaper cartoonist drew a cartoon about the incident.&nbsp; This cartoon bear became popular and subsequent cartoons about the President used it;
