On Thursday, February 28th and Friday, March 1st, Maya and I held our green clothing drive!
The drive was a success! We gathered enough clothes to fill 10 large garbage bags. Most of the people donating clothes were faculty, staff, and our friends at the University. Our position in the cafeteria during lunch hours on these days made for great visibility – we had at least 15 people ask us what we were doing, why we were doing it, and if they could donate at a later time. Through these conversations, Maya and I were able to inform people about the negative impacts of textile production and waste on our environment, and the importance of reusing clothes or recycling textiles properly. When asked, we let people know that the clothing collected will be dispersed among the following organizations: casual women’s clothes and children’s clothes will go to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre; professional women’s clothes will go to Dress for Success; casual men’s clothes will go to Big Brother; professional men’s clothes will go to Working Gear; and, any clothing items that are too worn (pilled, holes, stained, etc.) will be taken to Beyond the Blue Box Recycling Drop-Off Depot to go through a textile recycling process. Some people dropping off clothes thanked us for hosting the drive. As well, some people found our information about recycling “unwearable” clothes particularly important (because some charities receiving old clothes simply toss them into the garbage). Overall, I had a lot of fun hosting the drive and spreading interest and information about our activism campaign!
