The Threat of Generative AI

The rapid advancement of generative AI technologies since 2021 has posed significant threats to genuine human creations and connections, which are crucial for society to thrive. Policy development, regulation, and oversight are needed immediately in order to combat these challenges, and ensure society doesn’t rapidly decline into a spectacle of itself.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Dall-E generates content by replicating and re-assimilating already existing content. This process raises concerns for the dilution of genuine creative human content. While these AI programs can create human-like content, they do not foster true intelligence or creativity, and crediting them with such attributes is damaging. James Bridle cautions that perceiving AI as genuinely knowledgeable “risks poisoning the well of collective thought, and of our ability to think at all.”

The integration of AI also poses threats to sectors of employment, particularly in creative industries. Human artists have faced a reduced demand due to the heightened prevalence and accessibility of generative AI. This shift not only impacts livelihoods of creators but also raises ethical questions about the commodification of creativity; and the trajectory of higher intellect of society. If generative AI cannot produce genuinely new or creative products, and the general public is still falling under its trend, where will society be if there are no regulations or oversight put in place for AI?

To mitigate these risks, it is crucial to establish comprehensive policies and regulations that govern the development and application of generative AI. Such measures should protect both the integrity of human creativity and the stability of societal structures. Proactive engagement with these challenges will help harness AI’s benefits while safeguarding against its potential to cause harm.
