The future is a difficult thing to predict to say the least. I think that extreme weather events will occur more frequently and with greater force as time goes on. Heat waves during the summer and extremely low temperatures during the winter months will become more commonplace than out of the ordinary as they are for Vancouver today. Humans are extremely adaptive, and I believe that we will find ways to adapt to these changes such as finding more efficient ways to heat and cool homes to save power. I think that the use of personal transportation will go down as well as transition to having at least equal, if not more electric cars on roads than gasoline-powered cars in the near future. More people will begin to ride electric bicycles or scooters around areas like downtown instead of diving. This will be driven by a need for lower carbon emissions, as well as a push from the government to have fewer gasoline-powered cars on the road. Another change that may occur for Vancouver’s transportation may be public transit switching to all-electric vehicles in an attempt to reduce carbon emissions. Switching to electricity generated from nuclear fission is something that Vancouver has been working towards and I think that we are going to begin to phase out fossil fuels entirely in favour of only relying on renewable energy. This energy may come from nuclear fusion as it is a cleaner option than fossil fuels and does not produce the waste that nuclear fusion does. This technology is being researched and developed locally and I think that they will try to implement it in Vancouver to see if it is a viable solution to fossil fuels. Rising sea levels are going to have a very large effect on the city of Vancouver as water levels rising is an irreversible effect of climate change. Beaches will shrink and buildings very close to sea levels will be subject to frequent flooding and possibly will need to be abandoned. In response to this, I think that we will be able to find a way to prevent this flooding if we prepare for it on time. Walls to block ocean water from coming inland will likely be implemented along with better storm drainage systems. Other areas of my community will continue to develop as they have been in recent years. I think that Capilano university will continue to grow and develop as a school in the coming years. It has steadily gained notoriety as a university, and it will likely continue to do so. Capilano University will likely expand its campus to allow an increase in enrollment as well as add more course options for students. Overall, I think that my current community will continue to grow and expand in the future. This community will become more prepared for the coming changes in the distant future due to things like climate change. In addition, we will also become more connected to our environment to protect it in the future.
