They were not only the start of a written language among humans, but also the start of design. Like design in today’s society, hieroglyphs are made up of simple drawings, syllabic, and alphabetic elements. By using hieroglyphs, Egyptians were able to put more detail into stories. This form of writing allowed history and knowledge to be passed down easier and more accurately. Writing in general is the foundation for a functioning society. It helps solidify laws and record important information about the world around us. An example of this is how hieroglyphs were used to record rules and data, which is what started the first Egyptian dynasty. Menes, the first king of ancient Egypt, brought together the southern and northern kingdoms. This was around the time that writing was first seen in Egypt. Hieroglyphs impacted the way civilians in Egypt lived, just like how graphic design impacts our world daily. Knowing the origin of design is a great way to understand how it can impact a society. Hieroglyphs changed how the Egyptians lived, suddenly there was written stories, and laws.

https://ebookcentral-proquest-com.ezproxy.capilanou.ca/lib/capilano-ebooks/detail.action?docID=422793.

“Egyptian hieroglyphs.” Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation,

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egyptian_hieroglyphs.

Britannica, The Editors of Encyclopaedia. “hieroglyph”. Encyclopedia Britannica, 14 May. 2020,

https://www.britannica.com/topic/hieroglyph.
