Georges Seurat

Realism, Pre-Impressionism, Pre-Raphaelites and Impressionism, Post-Impressionism.

Georges Seurat was a French painter and draftsmen, born on December 2, 1859, and passed away on March 29, 1891. He is most known as one of the icons of 19-century art and altered art history by initiating NeoImpressionism, a technique also known as Divisionism or Pointillism. Seurat’s subjects focused on urban leisure, located by a river or beach, depicting the locals relaxing, using bright pastel colours by flicking them across his canvas. I found his paintings to be very touching and show an array of emotions, full of passion and life. The simplicity of his pieces has an element of peacefulness and serenity that is rare and special. Arguably by far, his most love piece has to be, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Which was featured in the beloved film Ferris Bullers Day Off, as did Nighthawks by Edward Hopper, The Old Guitarist by Pablo Picasso, and Equestrienne by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Some of Georges Seurat’s more prominent pieces include, Bathers at Asnières, La Seine à la Grande-Jatte, La Tour Eiffel, and Models.
