Hi, I am Hailey from Vancouver Island in British Columbia Canada. I have recently completed a Costuming for Stage and Screen Diploma from Capilanou.
My inspiration to begin my sewing journey started by watching my mom and grandma sewing when I was a child. The first project I made was a dress for my stuffed animal with my grandma, after that I was hooked. Sewing became a huge part of my life, from sewing classes through school and extra classes on the side.
Another one of my passions was the art of Ballet; however, I had to give up dancing in grade 10 due to feet problems. That year my joy of sewing took the stage as I started my journey to work in the Costuming industry. In making this decision there were many people who helped me as I worked on my first pancake tutu (pictured below). From then on, I helped bridge the gap between sewing and Ballet.
The first test of my skill happened in 2017 when I was in grade 11 when I went to Skills Canada for the Sewing Competition. I had 8 hours to complete a jacket with alterations. That year I came in last. For me it was a new learning experience, and I spent the next year practicing and learning new skills. In the competition next year I came in third place.
I was able to have many experiences in high school that allowed me to expand my network and refine my skills. I helped my school drama department with their costumes for the school play The Wizard of Oz and a small fairy tale play. This was my first time learning how to create costumes in a theatre setting.
My next step in my journey was Capilano University where I begun my career in Costuming in there Costuming for Stage and Screen Diploma! I learned so much about the aspects of my trade, including many tips and tricks for creating a fantastic production, both on and off screen!
