Reflection 2

Throughout this course, I have learned about the interdisciplinary approach, indigenous learning, and how these two things are extremely important in understanding the world, and our knowledge, in a way that I think is better. With the Indigenous approach to learning, I’ve learned that self-reflection is incredibly important, and I’ve began to find myself engaging in deep self-reflection over the last few weeks. For example, after the Lori Snyder walk, I reflected on my own abilities to learn more about nature, and what it has to give us. I’ve thought about how much power companies and advertisement have over our ideas. Before going on the walk with Lori, I didn’t realize how many amazing plants there are that either boost the immune system, help fight against cancers, or are edible and nutritious. However, companies and advertising say otherwise and “brainwash” us into thinking that we need their product. Not only is this a waste of our money, but it also generates a lot of waste and pollutants that harm the earth. Another thing that I think that I’ve reflected on and grown from is the interdisciplinary approach as a whole. Before taking this course, I didn’t realize how important it was to have a diverse education. After the literature review assignment, I realized how much more you can learn about a specific subject when looking at the different discipline’s approaches to the same idea.

When thinking about my future studies, I’ve realized that there isn’t just one area that I want to look at. Although I have always stuck to the same geography and sociology courses, I want to expand my learning to things such as anthropology, psychology, and even biology. All of these subjects have interested me in the past, but until now I haven’t realized how important an interdisciplinary approach to school is. While I may struggle, I think that my strong base in geography and sociology will help me understand the basics of these courses so that I can continue to build my interdisciplinary knowledge. In the long run, I think that taking courses in many different disciplines will help with my overall understanding of the courses I enjoy the most and allow me to make deeper connections to what I’m learning.

Working on my ePortfolio has been an enjoyable part of this course for me. It has given me a place to express myself and spotlight my work. I think that continuing to use my ePortfolio to share my work will help me set a higher standard for future assignments and allow me to “show off” my hard work. I feel like it’s a great platform for students to start using more because it allows you to spotlight the aspects of your studies that you want other people to see. It’s also a great place to archive work, or experiences, that future employers might like to see. I personally think that I will continue to use it to showcase my academics and intellectual experiences so that I can use them to assist me in reaching my goals.
