Observation Assignment

I drew my map in a way that emphasizes the area that I am around the most which make it nowhere near accurate to how the buildings are compared to one another. For example, I made Fir, Willow and a couple of the other buildings I never go to very small even though they are some of the bigger buildings on campus. The buildings and area that matter the most to me are the Library, Cedar, Birch and the two furthest parking lots from the school and the Sportsplex as they are where I visit the most. I still structured my map similarly to the real campus but made it so the buildings were bigger or smaller based on how significant they were for me.

In the library, there is now a division of new and old. With the change of the computer area into the new learning commons with writing and math help and the old of the main area with many desks, books, chairs, couches, computers to print from and front desk. In the student lounge, there are sections of two couches; each is split up by walls. In the common area outside of the library, there are areas for people who wish to smoke or vape as the majority of people do not wish to be surrounded by it. They are given these places as to not disturb other students.

The majority of the school is open to anyone whether they are students or not, for example, the library does not need a student card to access and there are many children’s books as there is a Children’s Centre on campus for professors and students that have children too young for elementary school or if they have days off. On the other hand, when accessing the Fitness Centre you need a recent student pass as they must be scanned at the doors of the workout facility and gymnasium. There are really no areas that are divided by gender, other than the washrooms and change rooms. Even with natural division, not forced ones,  you rarely see areas that predominantly male or female. On occasion, the gym or the smoke pit will be filled with more men than women, but there is always a combination of the two. There is a building that is used as a daycare and is only open for parents, staff and children. Certain parts of the buildings on campus are only for staff, whether is be custodial staff or administrative staff or profs. Students are not regularly allowed in these areas.

Throughout the library, there are different “Quiet Spaces” that are used for a very focused study. There is no talking allowed in these spaces and are rarely filled during the majority of the school, but when the exam period comes around it can be difficult to find a seat in those rooms. Throughout the rest of the library, you are allowed to talk and eat food but are still good places to study. The rest of the Library is classrooms, which is why it is in the centre of my map as I have two classes on the second floor. For me, the cedar building is just used as classrooms; I never go there two studies, but I am there a lot of the time as I have my other two classes in that building. The Birch building is relevant for me as I use it when needing administrative work or when getting food as there is a cafeteria. Finally the last significant building for myself is the Fitness Centre as it is where I go to workout.

In reality, the majority of campus is significant to me as I pass every part of it. Some places I visit more often than others, but I see them all at least once a week. I believe Capilano should be proud of the lack of segregation and divisions on campus. There are not many places that are predominantly male or female which is a good sign for the future of the school.
