I’ve spent my entire life in Vancouver; I was born in North Vancouver at Lions Gate Hospital and have only lived in Horseshoe Bay. I’ve grown to love this city and its diversity and incredible environment that is so close to home. I appreciate what we have in this city, being able to step out of my backyard and into a rain forest is an incredible opportunity that is taken for granted every day.
I began school at Ecole Pauline Johnson and were there until Grade 7 where I moved onto Sentinel Secondary School. Learning French opened up many doors for me and will open up more doors for me in my life. After Pauline Johnson, I moved onto Sentinel Secondary School and continued in French Immersion until Grade 10 which is when I decided to switch out of French. After another year in Sentinel, I switched in Grade 11 to Rockridge Secondary School as it was closer to home and there was no point in me staying at Sentinel as I wasn’t in French anymore.
One of the key moments in my life was when I transferred from Sentinel to Rockridge as it was a big change for me. At Sentinel, most of my peers were people I’d been to school with since the beginning at Pauline Johnson and I needed a change. A few of my closest friends decided to make the switch as well. Once at Rockridge I made a bunch of new friends with my close group. It was one of the best decisions I’d ever made.
During my time in high school. I found an interest in politics and history. I was most interested in ancient history and 19th-century and 20th-century history. At some point during my time at Capilano, I hope to take politics as I am already taking History. For a very long time, I’ve been interested in Geography and have always had a knack for it; it’s one of the courses that I am very excited to take during my time at university as I’ve never really had the opportunity to take the class.
I discovered a love for photography and still continue following that hobby and wish to make something out of it after university. Being able to capture a moment in time is something that’s absolutely beautiful. From photographing cars to people to landscapes I love it. Taking photos of the night sky is one of my favourite kinds of photos to take as you are getting to observe the unobservable. One of my other interests is my love for cars; I’ve liked them since a little kid, but once I bought my own car and gotten involved with car groups my interest exploded into a love. Working on my car is an escape from the world around me; I can focus on that and only that. I forget about any other stresses that I have while driving or working on my car.
One of my favourite sports is Ultimate Frisbee, I’ve been playing it since I was 11 years old and have loved every moment of it. I also mountain bike as one of my pass times, I got into it as my dad has been riding bikes for a long time and growing with world-renowned trails quite literally in my backyard I have such an amazing opportunity that I couldn’t pass it up. Along with the amazing mountain biking trails, during the winter these mountains are perfect for snowboarding which is my winter sport of choice. My love for both of these sports come from the amazing feeling flying down a run on the edge of being in control and crashing; constantly having adrenaline running through your body, always keeping you alert. You risk injury constantly and it is an incredible feeling of being on edge.
One of my other hobbies is collecting sneakers. I have had this interest for a little over a year and love it. It may be a little bit of retail therapy and consumerism, but I like having the option of customizability with what I wear. It’s a way of representing myself every day and gives me options. Having multiple pairs of shoes actually is quite helpful and means my shoes will last longer as I wear each pair less often than if I only had one pair of shoes. A lot of people that I know do not understand my fascination with shoes; they don’t understand how I can spend so much money on it when it isn’t a necessity, but I argue that given the fact I’m buying more expensive shoes they, for one, last longer and, two, are much more comfortable than the shoes a lot of people that I know to purchase. Close to the topic of shoes a few friends and I have started a small clothing brand; clothing is one of my other interests as it another way of describing yourself. We’ve started the brand as a way to make clothing that we want to wear, but it also gives us a small profit off every piece we sell.
The subject matter, of this course, is something that I find incredibly important with the focus on the environment. It’s something that even though we have put so much effort into changing it and have made a huge effort into spreading the knowledge of making a difference it still is in decline. It’s important for us to focus on what we can do to aide our environment as it is a constant struggle that we are facing every day. I am excited to use this course to develop my ability to use the knowledge I gain in different ways; it’ll let me use different perspective to develop opinions on other topics.
