My experience in English 100 has been a lot more than just reading and completing assignments. English has personally been my favorite since primary school and after studying English 100 in my first semester, my interests in the subject have diversified. I got to know the subject in a new way, as back in school, there were just literature lessons and exercises. Moreover, getting a very understanding professor with excellent teaching skills has added to my success in this course. There have been numerous things that I have learned from the past few readings in this course. However the most important one was changing our perception towards the world and not considering ourselves as the central entity. I could connect very well to the example given by David Foster Wallace about adult life and hence found the message given my him, an ideal one, to transform my thought process .I was very impressed by his definition of “real freedom”, which he describes as “attention, and awareness, and discipline, and and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over, in myriad petty little unsexy ways, everyday”(363). Another idea that I think will stick with me is about heeding the hurt, rather than the anger. We also got the opportunity to assemble a care package for a recipient we are angry at, as from the past few readings we have learned that anger can be seen a channel to circumvent care, if used in a thoughtful way. My care package recipient was my roommate. I have been living with her since 2 months and many of her habits have been upsetting me all this while. I have been trying to change them lately, while telling her how her habits are not good for both of us, but I have not seen any significant changes. Firstly, both of us are international students and have left home in order to pursue our studies. In such a situation, it becomes very important for us to communicate with each other as there is no family over here. Secondly, all of us know that cleanliness begins at home. An organized and tidy house is necessary, not only because it looks presentable, but also because it makes a person feel euphoric. She is habitual of not keeping her surroundings clean, which makes it difficult for me to live in the same room. I think changing these habits will not only be beneficial for me but also for her own self, as well as other people who might have to live with her in the future. I hope my care package brings a significant difference in her and succeeds to fulfill its purpose.
