{"id":1894,"date":"2018-04-20T18:31:48","date_gmt":"2018-04-21T01:31:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/jawaters\/?p=1894"},"modified":"2018-06-18T16:42:20","modified_gmt":"2018-06-18T23:42:20","slug":"tech-breaks-should-we-or-shouldnt-we","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/jawaters\/tech-breaks-should-we-or-shouldnt-we\/","title":{"rendered":"Tech Breaks &#8211; should we or shouldn&#8217;t we?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Should we have tech breaks in class to allow the addiction\/distraction temporary free reign, as Rosen has suggested?<\/p>\n<p>Plus side to brief tech breaks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students may be less tempted to check their phones if they know there will be a tech break.<\/li>\n<li>Gives a break in their engagement with the class content, a bit of a rest that relieves the fatigue of concentration on the topic.<\/li>\n<li>For those who become increasingly anxious when not allowed to check their phone, it relieves their anxiety.<\/li>\n<li>Breaks of any kind allow information to be consolidated in memory so can enhance learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Down sides:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any interruption in a person&#8217;s sustained attention leads to attentional &#8216;start-up costs&#8221;, where the class has to re-focus and remember where they had left off.<\/li>\n<li>Having started to text or email or facebook, students might not want to stop when the break is over.<\/li>\n<li>Tech breaks don&#8217;t seem to reduce the frequency of texting in class, according to some studies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And then the instructor has to decide how often to do a tech break? every 10 minutes? halfway through the class?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Should we have tech breaks in class to allow the addiction\/distraction temporary free reign, as Rosen has suggested?
