An eportfolio is a collection of a student’s work that displays the student’s gradual learning process in a clear way. As a student learns more and more, it is easy to get tunnel vision and overlook the previous knowledge that was gained, but eportfolios can take you back down the roads that you have taken and reflect upon them. Eportfolios can also serve as great tools for examination by instructors and employers alike, as it archives the student’s learning in an organized way. An instructor/employer will have a better understanding of a student’s level of knowledge as their previous works are all laid out and easily accessible. Another benefit of eportfolios is the ability for students to view each other’s work and compare them with their own, and give constructive criticism. According to the University of Waterloo, “the process of reflection originates as a solo activity, but becomes social through a feedback loop, as the student’s instructor, peers, mentors, and even family members respond to and provide commentary on those reflections.” In summary, eportfolios are a great way for students to reflect upon their work, enabling instructors/employers to easily access them, and for other students to view and give criticism.
