WordPress.org and Wordpress.com may look similar at a glance, but their functions are a bit different. According to Tanya Thibodeau, WordPress.com is a website that will help you build a website and host it, while Wordpress.org is a place where you download the WordPress software and create the website yourself. Some similarities are there, like how in both instances you are using the WordPress software to build the website, but the fundamental difference is that Wordpress.com hosts your website, while Wordpress.org doesn’t. If I had to create a website of my own, I would probably prefer Wordpress.org because of the freedom that it gives to the creator. According to the Editorial Staff of “wpbeginner.com”, you get full control of your website with Wordpress.org with the added fees of having to host the website yourself, while also having the ability to run ads on your website to generate income. Wordpress.com however, although having the option of being free and is more accessible, does not allow you to place ads on the website yourself and is very limiting in the free version. If I’m going to create a website, I might as well take the time to build it with Wordpress.org and host it for a small amount of money with the option of monetizing it whenever I want to.
