Hello, my name is Jessica Baik. I am originally from Korea. I have moved to Canada when I was 9 years old, then I graduated high school from here in Surrey. An interesting fact about me to start with could be that I have just received my Canadian Citizenship this summer. I am proud to have the Korean culture in the background as well as having Canadian culture absorbed as growing up here. My discipline of study is the IDEA program, Bachelor of Visual Communication. In this program we learn illustration, design, photography, and more variety of styles in arts. I have chosen this area of studies as my major because illustration and design was always one of my favorite styles of art. I grew up drawing my whole life, and it was also an area where I felt most confident and had shown most strength in. I thought that learning many kinds of arts would help me to grow into bigger and creative artist.
In these studies, I want to learn more about traditional arts like painting and life drawing because I have only tired digital art so far, so at the end of this program I want to feel more confident with drawing in real life. Another thing I want to learn is more specific about graphic design and learn to create art pieces that catch people’s eyes in one sight. I also want to learn more photography because it is something that I never tried and learned. In the future I want to be a book cover designer or book illustrator or create my own comic if I get the chance in the future. Although I want to do those in my future career, as I expand and succeed with skills in the studies that I am doing right now, I want to be open minded as possible for any careers in the future.
This would make you wonder why I have chosen to study at Capilano University. One of the biggest reasons that made me strongly want to come to this school was my sister. She has graduated the 2D animation and visual development program from Capilano university. So, I have heard lots of good information about the IDEA program when I was preparing for my university. I thought it was perfect for me because I wanted to study in variety of different styles of arts and it seemed like this university had the perfect program that runs everything that I was searching for.
Hobbies that I enjoy doing when I have my free time to spare would be watching tv or movie series. I am a big fan of marvel movies since I really like big story lines and plots. I also enjoy watching anime which allowed me to grow interest into learning Japanese. I like to listen to music when I am working on my art. I enjoy listening to lots of different kind of genre such as K-pop, j-pop, classical, and more. I think playing clarinet in band for my entire high school years influenced me to listen to many kinds of music.
Lastly, in this ENG 100 course, I want to learn and succeed my skills in writing more professionally as the university expects high quality of works to be submitted. Another thing that I want to focus on learning is bringing quotations into my own work. I always found it difficult to make the quote flow nicely into my writings. Therefor, I want to learn how and when the use them properly and how to identify which is a good example of quotes. Critical thinking is something that I always want to improve on. In this course I want to expand my critical thinking skills with diverse of people’s point of views and thoughts. English has never been my strongest subject but in the end of this course I want to feel assured with writing essays.
