Ernst had studied psychology in school and was fascinated by delusions of the insane and their subconsciousness. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"722\" height=\"839\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kathrinteh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9743\/2019\/11\/the-elephant-celebes.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"198\" data-link=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kathrinteh\/?attachment_id=198\" class=\"wp-image-198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kathrinteh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9743\/2019\/11\/the-elephant-celebes.jpg 722w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kathrinteh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9743\/2019\/11\/the-elephant-celebes-258x300.jpg 258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 722px) 100vw, 722px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>The Elephant Celebes <\/em><\/strong><em>was Ernst&#8217;s first large painting, painted in 1921.  <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.max-ernst.com\/images\/paintings\/the-triumph-of-surrealism.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.max-ernst.com\/images\/paintings\/the-triumph-of-surrealism.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>Ernst created <strong>The Triumph of Surrealism <\/strong>for a Surrealist exposition in Paris; it represents the chaos present during the Spanish Civil War.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Forced into an artillery division of the German army in WWI, Ernst beared witness to horrible atrocities which fueled his rejection of reality, which he saw as irrational.  He had been interested in painting since his father taught him as a young boy, so after the war he decided to take on the role of full-time artist.  Despite his idiosyncratic personality which was imbued into his work, he gained many followers throughout his life and deeply influenced art as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.max-ernst.com\/images\/paintings\/the-eye-of-silence.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.max-ernst.com\/images\/paintings\/the-eye-of-silence.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>This is my favourite of all of his works, titled <strong>The Eye of Silence<\/strong>.  I love the intricate structures portrayed with an alien, ethereal aura.  I find that the clouds in the background really ground the foreign imagery, as it makes the image feel more real with an element of familiarity.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.max-ernst.com\/images\/paintings\/temptation-of-saint-anthony.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.max-ernst.com\/images\/paintings\/temptation-of-saint-anthony.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>I really love <strong>The Temptation of Saint Anthony<\/strong>, due to the interesting beasts depicted and the darkness of the forms overtaking the image from the left.
