Sorolla was greatly inspired by Diego Velazquez, as well as other great masters, painting many studies of their works in his early career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.picturis.es\/es\/cuadros-de-artistas-famosos\/joaquin-sorolla\/selling-melons-comprar-cuadro.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.picturis.es\/images\/stories\/virtuemart\/product\/selling.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>The detail in <strong>Selling Melons <\/strong>is astonishing; one of his many pieces portraying Spanish culture.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Studying in Paris, Rome, and his hometown Valencia in Spain, Sorolla cultivated his artistic talents from the age of 15.  His parents died when he was only two years old, so he was raised alongside his sister by their aunt and uncle.  This perhaps contributed to his focus on family, and he later painted many portraits of his wife and children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sorollapaintings.com\/images\/sorolla-sewing-the-sail-1034.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Mending the Sail <\/em><\/strong><em>is my favourite of all his works, due to the dappled light and gorgeous, lively colouring.  His paintings were quite large &#8211; this one being 2.22 x 3 metres.<\/em>  <em>Not only were his paintings large, however, but his palettes were too. Every effect is so transient, it must be rapidly painted.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sorollapaintings.com\/images\/sorolla-37-1600.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption><em>I adore <strong>Return from Fishing<\/strong>, as not only is the scene itself breathtaking, but his execution makes it even more so.
