{"id":47,"date":"2019-09-29T22:00:17","date_gmt":"2019-09-29T22:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kelseavance\/?p=47"},"modified":"2019-09-29T22:00:18","modified_gmt":"2019-09-29T22:00:18","slug":"artemisia-gentileschi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kelseavance\/2019\/09\/29\/artemisia-gentileschi\/","title":{"rendered":"Artemisia Gentileschi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>High Renaissance &amp; Mannerism<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artemisia Gentileschi was born in the Papal States in 1593, daughter to the painter Orazio Gentileschi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kelseavance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9755\/2019\/09\/gentileschi_artemisia_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kelseavance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9755\/2019\/09\/gentileschi_artemisia_1.jpg 220w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kelseavance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9755\/2019\/09\/gentileschi_artemisia_1-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><figcaption>She studied under her father as well as Angostina Tassi completing her first work <em>Susanna and the Elders<\/em> <em>(1610)<\/em> at the age of seventeen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Both her and her father interpreted many of Caravaggio&#8217;s paintings and his dramatic realism is seen in both their works; although, her work was much more realistic than that of her father or Caravaggio and her compositions more dramatic. Artemisia was one of the few female artists to succeed in the 17th century. She made female figures the focus of her work giving the women depicted power and importance. Her experience with sexual assault as a teenager impacted many of the themes in her work, as she was likely working through her trauma this way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"235\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kelseavance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9755\/2019\/09\/gentileschi_artemisia_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49\" \/><figcaption><em>Danae (1612)<\/em>, <br>jewel tones were a statement in Artemisia&#8217;s work, and thought the subject of this piece is common she paints Danae in a rather unique way.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"330\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kelseavance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9755\/2019\/09\/gentileschi_artemisia_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kelseavance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9755\/2019\/09\/gentileschi_artemisia_3.jpg 330w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/kelseavance\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9755\/2019\/09\/gentileschi_artemisia_3-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><figcaption><em>Judith Slaying Holofernes (c.1620)<\/em>,<br>Another popular subject matter depicted.
