His mother was a musician and his father an architect, so Moreau was exposed to art from a very young age. His parents ensured that he got a good education. At the age of 15, he visited Rome, Italy where he\u00a0developed a keen interest in art.\u00a0Later, at around the age of 18, he studied with Fran\u00e7ois-Edouard Pico, the Neoclassical painter, and prepared for the entrance exam to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 376px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/b\/b6\/GustaveMoreau02.jpg\/220px-GustaveMoreau02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"473\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Self Portrait, Gustave Moreau<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gustave Moreau&#8217;s visionary paintings speak to an obsession with the otherworldly which makes him one of the most fascinating artists of 19th century. His unusual faith,\u00a0called Neo-Platonism, inspired him to pay close attention to the imperfection of our physical world. He believed that by doing so he\u00a0was &#8220;allowing divine vision to speak through his brush&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 2566px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/9\/9e\/Gustave_Moreau_-_Piet%C3%A0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2566\" height=\"2028\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pieta, Gustave Moreau<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Most of his art is focused on biblical scenes. However, he would interpret them according to his own ideas, imagination, and faith. There is also quite a lot of symbolism in his work. He took those symbols to represent humans&#8217; desires and emotions in the abstract form.
