He is preeminently identified with Pop Art, a movement he helped originate, and his first fully achieved paintings were based on imagery from comic strips and advertisements and rendered in a style mimicking the crude printing processes of newspaper reproduction.<\/p>\n<p>Lichtenstein\u2019s success was matched by his focus and energy, and after his initial triumph in the early 1960s, he went on to create an oeuvre of more than <strong>5,000<\/strong> paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, murals and other objects celebrated for their wit and invention.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5296\/5535075524_bee0dcccd6_o.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"418\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roy Lichtenstein, Self Portrait<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What makes his art so special is the fact that nothing like this had been done before Lichtenstein\u00a0came along. A lot of art critics did not take his art seriously because to them it wasn&#8217;t &#8220;<em>real art<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 473px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imgc.allpostersimages.com\/img\/print\/posters\/roy-lichtenstein-crying-girl-c-1963_a-G-8307149-0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"355\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roy Lichtenstein, Crying Girl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His work, along with that of Andy Warhol, heralded the beginning of the Pop art movement, and, essentially, <em>the end of Abstract Expressionism<\/em> as the dominant style. Lichtenstein did not simply copy comic pages directly, he employed a complex technique that involved cropping images to create entirely new, dramatic compositions, as in\u00a0<i>Drowning Girl<\/i>, whose source image included the woman&#8217;s boyfriend standing on a boat above her.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/d\/df\/Roy_Lichtenstein_Drowning_Girl.jpg\/300px-Roy_Lichtenstein_Drowning_Girl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"304\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drowning Girl<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 326px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/learn\/moma_learning\/_assets\/www.moma.org\/wp\/moma_learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DCComics_RunforLove-252x395.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"511\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drowning Girl (Original Comic)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Later in his career,\u00a0Lichtenstein was particularly fascinated by the abstract way in which cartoonists drew mirrors, using diagonal lines to denote a reflective surface.
