Carter was born in 1891 in Missouri and grew up on an Indian Reservation. He studied in Los Angeles at the Art Students&#8217; League. After that, he moved to New York to study under Robert Henri. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/americangallery.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/10\/woman-in-an-interior.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>Woman In An Interior. Carter&#8217;s early work.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It looks like in his early work Pruett Carter stuck to the more traditional style of painting, which is why it&#8217;s now very distinguishable from most other painters. However, in Woman In An Interior you can already see his love for painting female beauty, which later became the main feature in his paintings and illustrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/americangallery.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/10\/friends-and-lovers.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>Friends and Lovers. Carter&#8217;s later work. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, in Friends and Lovers, he pictures a man and a woman sitting on the rocks by the sea. We can only see the back of the man&#8217;s head but the woman is portrayed as an icon &#8211; a modern goddess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was known for doing illustrations for women\u2019s magazines, working in mainly oil and gouache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ZI2K-mq2JUA\/U6lghYUzbEI\/AAAAAAAAXFo\/-2GTBpTevQE\/s1600\/Pruett+Carter+Summer+Lands.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>Summer Sands. The woman in this illustration looks beautiful yet very vulnerable.
