{"id":203,"date":"2019-03-05T14:25:52","date_gmt":"2019-03-05T22:25:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/marinasubach\/?p=203"},"modified":"2019-03-05T14:25:52","modified_gmt":"2019-03-05T22:25:52","slug":"1970-1980-social-awakenings-george-hardie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/marinasubach\/2019\/03\/05\/1970-1980-social-awakenings-george-hardie\/","title":{"rendered":"1970-1980 Social Awakenings: George Hardie"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>George Hardie<\/strong>\u00a0(born 1944) is an\u00a0English graphic designer,\u00a0illustrator and educator, best known for his work producing cover art for the albums of rock musicians and bands with the\u00a0British art design group Hipgnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theaoi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hardie_1973-self-portrait-RGB-25ps0d5_550.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>George Hardie, self portrait, 1973<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hardie was trained at St Martin\u2019s and the Royal College of Art and worked as a designer\/illustrator for more than 40 years, making illustrations for clients around the world. He was the cover artist behind Led Zeppelin\u2019s debut album Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd\u2019s Dark Side of the Moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theaoi.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Hardie_1975-Pink-Floyd.-Wish-You-Were-Here-RGB-13alp15_550.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption>Wish You Were Here, 1975<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years Hipgnosis produced artwork for some of the most influential bands of the era including\u00a0<strong>Led Zeppelin<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Genesis,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Black Sabbath<\/strong>, but it was the bold graphic design for\u00a0<em>The Dark Side of the Moon<\/em>\u00a0which thrust the studio\u2019s work into the public eye when it hit record stores in March 1973.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the process of creating the album cover, the breakthrough moment was provided by Storm Thorgerson(member of Hipgnosis) who remembered an\u00a0<strong>illustration from a photography book<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>showing the process of light refraction through a glass prism<\/strong>; \u201cAn inspirational image in itself\u201d as Hardie recalls.
