What does the future hold for my community?

Bowen Island, my community, has been for such a long time a very sleepy minute village having
somewhat of a diverse cosmopolitan populace mixed with an eclectic reclusive resident. In the next year
Bowen will open a new community center, new full-service fire station, new municipal office center and
an operational trauma medical center. This is massive change for a small community which prided itself
as being accessible to the world in 20 minutes but so remote, peaceful and rural that it does not exist.
The inhabitants of Bowen such as myself really had a life which is rural and city. We have never
locked our doors and all my friends can be together constantly, as the island is so small in minutes you
are part of their life. After grade 7 everyone has to take the Ferry to high school on the mainland. An
experience which in itself is exceptional. Who takes a Ferry and Bus to school every day with their best
and worst friends (600 hundred of us every day). The ferry is the life blood of the island it brings
peoples, goods, tourists, health workers, everything comes through the Ferry. Change is really slowed
because of this ferry but transformation is happening, a gentrification of this world is coming and hence
the future is growth.
These four new essentially buildings bring what? A real fire department! Sort of! A real medical
trauma unit! A real municipal Building! A community center! The eclectic recluse says we had all this in
quaint little buildings while the cosmopolitan will say we had services which were very inept. Change
can be a curse or it can be so inviting. In my sociology class this was a major part of my study and cannot
help but seeing many of the ideals in this piece. A tina village manifests from nothing slowly and then
latent values are it grows up.
The new features of these monuments are a stage theater more municipal offices to office in, a
medical center, sorely needed for emergencies, a fire department which really is our emergency service
team and then some more offices. The real new entity is more people working within these confines and
some theatre, personally a pool or basketball court with a stage would have been more appropriate.
Bowen is changing, the people moving here are displacing those antiques which were the
culture of the past. The old timer is being displaced and the tourist is now becoming the resident more
often than not. I feel for both the old and the new, the city Vancouver although physically not closer it
just feels more prevalent.
Transformation is here and the future is more of everything that a big city has. I often hear
people say they prefer the old ways, I hear, feel, sense, smell, and see the change.

The Ferry is Life blood of Bowen Island and we ferry every day to go to the mainland . I used to take this ferry at 7:30 in the morning to high school for 3 years and it would always be something normal to see the same people siting in the same sets on the ferry. I would sit with my friends on ferry in the same spots, it became a habit to do the same thing very day. You can get know the ferry works and the ferry works see you grow up. This ferry runs every hour it takes about 20mins to go one way. Every thing comes off the ferry, we get food , gas, building materials and we need the ferry to get the hospital because we do not have one on island. We get to see a lot of wild life on ferry too like sea loins, whales, orca's and eagles.

This is Snug Cafe a place I worked at for 4 years. It is the first Cafe you see on Bowen and everyone comes here from regulars to tourists. Bowen has a population of 4,500 people and every summer we get about 1 million tourists who travel here. In summer the sung will be packed from lines that go out the door around the cafe. The Snug cafe was my first job I had and it taught me a lot about how to work in customer service and working with others. It was hard work there but your co works look out for each other and they become kinda like a family in a way. I come back to the sung every summer because its a job that I know how to do and if you live on Bowen there is a big chance that your first job is going to be here.

This Crippen park a place where everyone walks there dogs and plays sports. I always go here when I got off work to see friends and party pretty much, this a big part of the community because everyone goes here to celebrate something birthdays to what every you want. The Bowen Island community sometimes has their bands play every single year here and we have Bowfest here which is celebration that we have in the summer where we have bouncy castle, people selling local art and crafts, a lot of cool food vendors and etc. Near Crippen park is the baseball diamond which our local baseball teams play at and some baseball team come from the mainland to play to, it is a big event.

The Orchard Recovery Center shown here is one of many health and welfare centers catering towards treatments, recovery, mindfulness, yoga and holistic venues on the island. The Orchard itself is a detox center catering to private clientele from Vancouver and greater BC. This center combines the outdoor exercises and many other amenities such as a pool, work facilities, medical practitioners and Bowens beautiful natures walks. When one takes the time to discovery all the amenities here on the island which cater to wellness, it truly is a Mecca. There are many and some of the best which I like is as simple the hiking, there are literally 40 plus trails of varying difficulty on the island to clear your mind and feed your sole .
