I wrote this Summary for English 100 on an article about the effects of climate change.
The chapter three of the novel “The Water Will Come”, written by Jeff Goodell, describes the increasement of the ice melting rate in Antartica and Greenland by presenting possible causes and consequences. The author claims “[b]etween 2012 and 2016 alone, a trillion tons of ice vanished” (55). Basically, Goodell emphasizes the impact of the problem. One factor causing this phenomenon could be the “darkening of snow” caused by soot or by algae and bacteria (Goodell 51). The author reports “[d]ark snow absorbs more heat than clean snow” (51). In making this comment, Goodell is saying that dark snow influences ice melting because it accelerates the process compared to white snow. The author establishes the warming ocean water is “enough to increase the melt rate” (53). In other words, Goodell is introducing another possible cause. One of the consequences presented by the author is “what scientists call a runaway collapse of the ice sheet” (54). This collapse would cause the increasement of the sea levels “by about two hundred feet” which will end “drowning cities” (52).
