The proposed topic of investigation for this tutorial is carceral geography; an emerging field/subdiscipline of human geography concerned with spaces of incarceration. The tutorial will include a preliminary examination of the sub discipline’s scholarly roots and current discourse(s), followed by a process of reflexive, critical analysis paying close attention to the excluded voices of people experiencing incarceration and the impacts of their absence on this field of study’s methods, outcomes, and validity. In this way, the tutorial will be both an exploration of and intervention into carceral geography.
