For my the artifact assignment, I recreated Egyptian hieroglyphs carved into stone. This is not a copy of a real artefact, but my best attempt at what an authentic Egyptian artifact would look like. To make this as accurate as possible, I decided it was essential to find ways to make the clay look distressed. To mimic the deterioration of a real ancient artifact, I painted the stone using a very rough painting technique. I also made cracks and chips in the clay, as if the stone had broken off of a larger wall. When I went to carve the hieroglyphs into the clay, my instinct was to carve them into stone. I then realized the majority of the reference photo I saw while researching showed hieroglyphs to be carved in relief. This was, without a doubt more challenging, but it was important to me to have it as accurate as possible. The colours I chose were to reflect what would have been available in this period. Overall I am very pleased with how the artifact turned out. As it stands, there is not anything I would change about it. I spent around 6 hours on this project. To self grade this assignment, I would give myself a 9\/10. This is because I feel I have closely followed the brief and provided a successful example of a hand-made articact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
