He was a Catalan painter who combined&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/Surrealism\" target=\"_blank\">Surrealist<\/a>&nbsp;fantasy with&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/abstract-art\" target=\"_blank\">abstract art<\/a>. He worked in&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/technology\/lithography\" target=\"_blank\">lithography<\/a>, produced murals, sculptures and tapestries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mywowo.net\/media\/images\/cache\/barcellona_fundacio_joan_miro_02_collezione_jpg_1200_630_cover_85.jpg\" alt=\"Audio guide JOAN MIR\u00d3 FOUNDATION - Collection - Tour Guide | MyWoWo\" width=\"671\" height=\"351\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-small-font-size\"><strong>Mir\u00f3\u2019s father worked as a goldsmith and watchmaker. Early on, Mir\u00f3 attended a commercial college, then worked two years as an office clerk. In 1912 he went on to participate in an art school in Barcelona.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-small-font-size\"><strong>From 1915 to 1919, Mir\u00f3 worked in Spain, Barcelona, Montroig, and on the island of Majorca. During this time, he painted landscapes, portraits, and nudes. His primary focus was on the interplay of volumes and areas of colour. He experimented with the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/Fauvism\" target=\"_blank\">Fauvist<\/a>&nbsp;style &#8211; bold and colourful- and tended to rely heavily on geometric shapes. This could be an influence taken from the work of the&nbsp;Cubist artists and Paul Cezanne.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/3\/33\/TheFarmMiro21to22.jpg\" alt=\"The Farm (Mir\u00f3) - Wikipedia\" width=\"681\" height=\"594\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-small-font-size\"><strong>In the early 1920s, Mir\u00f3 moved to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Spain\" target=\"_blank\">Spain<\/a>&nbsp;and Paris. During this time, he went through a period of experimentation with mediums and techniques. He played with the limits of painting and used materials like unprimed&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/collection\/terms\/16\" target=\"_blank\">canvases<\/a>,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/collection\/works\/37242\" target=\"_blank\">flocked paper<\/a>,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/collection\/works\/33621\" target=\"_blank\">cardboard<\/a>, copper and Masonite, paintings based on collage, and so-called&nbsp;drawing collages, and constructions&nbsp;and objects. He combined detailed realism with abstract landscapes. An example of this can be found in the&nbsp;<em>Farm<\/em>&nbsp;(1921) and&nbsp;<em>The Tilled Field<\/em>&nbsp;(1924).&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.guggenheim.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/1923\/01\/72.2020_ph_web_2.jpg\" alt=\"The Tilled Field | The Guggenheim Museums and Foundation\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-small-font-size\"><strong>From 1925 to 1928, he took influence from Dadaists&nbsp;and Surrealists. Mir\u00f3 painted imaginary landscapes and <\/strong>pictures that looked like a dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-small-font-size\"><strong>When looking at his art, I almost get a sense of nostalgia. Not because I have seen his art before but because it has a very childlike, playful feeling.
