They excelled at school particularly in science where they went to school in Lyon. The brothers were manufacturers of various photographic equipment. They ended up devising an early motion-picture camera and projector of visual images called the “Cinematographe”.

Cinematographe

Their main invention that basically acted as the heart of the machine was the mechanism that the film was transported through the camera in order to run. The way the machine worked was that there were two claws that were inserted into the sprocket holes then punched into the celluloid film strip. The pins moved the film along and then retracted, leaving the film stationary during exposure to solidify various images. The cinematographe then went down in history as the first film camera. With this They created the first motion picture, La Sortie des ouvriers de l’usine Lumiere (1895; “Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory”), The first public show with thier invention was unveiled on December 28, 1895, at the “Grand Cafe” on Paris’s Boulevard de Capuchines

Cinematographe Poster

Most of their films then after consisted of everyday French life.
