Regardless of whether people study a photograph or a drawing, human views towards data will be influenced by the way they perceive the world as a whole. As Berger states: “the way we see is affected by what we know.” There is a difference, however, between seeing your surroundings and knowing through texts or photographic descriptions. The main distinction between the two is that, by seeing, one can acquire first-hand experience. More room for interpretation exists when you read about a topic whereas, if you experience it first hand, filters are absent. In this scenario, the person’s knowledge can surpass a textbook.

For example, after truth and reconciliation week, I realized how relevant indigenous issues are today. After some thought, I concluded that my tutorials and graduating project had to include, aside from Mayan mythology, some relevant Mayan issues. Thus, for my second tutorial, I thought it appropriate to perform research on the ongoing political and legal affairs present in Mexico, specifically in the peninsula where the remaining Mayan culture still thrives. Thus, even though my second tutorial will include a lot of literary research, I am also planning on going to these Mayan communities myself to experience their culture first hand. Through my second tutorial, I will be able to see the difference between my textual research and my personal experiences.

Nevertheless, when going to these communities and dealing with photographs, I will have to remember that a camera is not a neutral eye since the full picture can never be taken. While one moment is being captured, another one is affecting that same instant behind the scenes. Thus, when observing pictures, there are many factors researchers cannot perceive due to the camera’s focus on a specific detail. However, photography is a reliable source since it provides an abundance of information. Yet, it is erroneous to assume a detail encompasses the full picture. More than the photography itself, it is people’ surroundings and social experiences that aid them to relate to reality hence data, such as photographs, can often be biased.

Reality is changed by the methods we use to inspect it. What “we see depends on what we expect and this is influenced by how we have already experienced life.” For example, my first two tutorials will be research-based, while my third tutorial will be a stepping-stone towards my graduating project. Before finishing my last project, I will create a script for my graphic novel. With a script, I will be able to start my final graphic novel by the time I begin my graduating project. Still, my method of telling the story will play a definite role in how I will perceive my research and how I will interact with my topic. This world is a media-oriented world. As such, we need to be aware of how the media influences our views. As well, the mediums we choose to communicate shape and bend our ways of seeing and knowing. We have to consider this when conducting research and completing creative projects.

Overall, visual data can be serviceable. When compared to drawings, photographs can be more reliable, but it doesn’t always have to be the case. Regardless of the data, we are inspecting we, as researchers, have to remember our place in the world and the things that affect our ways of writing, inspecting, knowing, and seeing our surroundings. By taking small steps and examining parts of the whole through written and visual data, we can assemble the puzzle pieces together and, with time, have an eminent insight of the ever-changing world we live in.

The various ways of seeing the world depend upon beliefs and perspectives.
