I have always compared it to the other universities, and didn’t appreciate it on its own. I have always compared my time at university to my friends times. Many of my friends go to UBC and they tell me how great it is to have a pub on campus or being able to live on residence. I always thought I was missing out on my university career. During this year, I have come to realize what a great campus we have and how lucky I am to go here. Capilano University may not have everything that other universities have, but it is great all on its own. The way that the campus is laid out, provides students the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. I am so glad that I go to Capilano University.

In my map I only added the places that are significant to me. I wanted to add the places that make me think about the good times I’ve had on campus. The places where I study, eat, and hang with friends. As I walk around the campus, I am automatically drawn to the places that I added to my map. All the places that I added to my map, are they places that give me joy. So as I walk around campus, I am filled with joy, while I look at all the places that mean different things to me. One thing that really compares to my map is how spacious the campus is and how close to nature it is. Being able to walk from class to class and being so close to the forest is amazing. Nothing beats being able to smell the scent of fresh trees as you walk to class.

My map isn’t an exact replica of the campus. I decided to leave out the things that were not important to me. As I walk around campus, many of the things I decided to leave out of my map are spatial divisions. Some of the major spatial divisions are the many buildings I didn’t add to my map. I didn’t feel the need to add the buildings that are not important or significant to me.

As I walk around campus and the spaces I decided to draw, I noticed that all the places had different categories of people. It is a beautiful day today and the courtyard is filled with many different people. Almost everyone is a student, with the exception of a instructor or two walking through. Everyone looks so happy as they bask in the sun and chat with their friends. There are people of all different ethnicities, as well as all ages. There are people sitting, eating, dancing, and smoking. Just enjoying their lives. Everyone has the freedom of movement to come here and enjoy the space, no matter the time of day. Next I walk to the library. As soon as you walk in, you can feel the stress from everyone. The room is filled with students studying and cramming before their next exam. There are also faculty there, that are willing to help you if you need help. Students at Capilano University are so lucky to have all the resources that we do. When it comes to the math or writing centre, or the librarians wanting to help the students with their research. Next is the Capilano Student Union, a place where students can come to relax, study, and hang with friends. As I walk through the CSU i see students of all types, but only students. There are no teachers, administrative, or faculty. Next I walk to the Tim Hortons lineup. This space has no specific category of people. Everyone loves Tim Hortons and there are people of all ages, ethnicities, and roles. Everyone has the freedom of movement here as long as it is open.

Different places on campus have different purposes and different reasons why people are there. As a result of this, the activities are classified based on different reasons. A big reason is noise. If an area is very noisy, people are most likely not going to study there, they are going to hang out with their friends and chat. An example of this is the courtyard. As I walked through the courtyard, there were people everywhere chatting and relaxing. It was very noisy making it a difficult place to study. Another way that activities are classified by space is by resources when it comes to studying. If someone needs to write a paper and they need books or help, they will not go to the CSU lounge, they will go to the library. Here they can study in silence and use the resources provided. Capilano University has such a beautiful campus and I am so lucky to be able to go here.

Over the last few years, I have taken Capilano University for granted.
