In this video Natalie Wynn, a former PHD philosophy student covers the topic and concept of “opulence.” Opulence is a word that came into widespread use within the drag scene to describe the aesthetic of simulated wealth and success, something that was common among drag performers of colour, that were usually lower class and had been barred from true wealth because of systemic racism. Natalie examines this practice, and how it be seen as an interesting examination of the relationship between wealth, class and race.
