He was a known symbolist painter from France. Moreau found his style with pieces that depicted mythical and religious themes with a heavy jewel like embroidered decorations. He set himself apart from the main movements of the era, realism and naturalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/moreau_gustave_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-250\" width=\"585\" height=\"1164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/moreau_gustave_1.jpg 201w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/moreau_gustave_1-151x300.jpg 151w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 585px) 100vw, 585px\" \/><figcaption><em>  \u201cOedipus and the Sphinx\u201d (1864) <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-very-light-gray-background-color\">\t\u201cOedipus and the Sphinx\u201d (1864) was the beginning of Moreau\u2019s mature period. The piece gives a new interpretation to the scene of Oedipus on his journey to Thebes. The piece itself gives no directness, instead it replies to your viewership with ambiguity and implied symbolism. It was also another piece where Moreau went back to Greek mythology for inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/the-apparition-1876.jpgLarge.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-252\" width=\"569\" height=\"862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/the-apparition-1876.jpgLarge.jpg 396w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/the-apparition-1876.jpgLarge-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 569px) 100vw, 569px\" \/><figcaption><em> \u201cThe Apparition\u201d (1876) <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-very-light-gray-background-color\">\tAfter two unpopular pieces, Moreau went to reassess his art and came out with \u201cThe Apparition\u201d (1876). The piece gives no identified part of a story, as well as breaking away from the central figures of his past paintings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/dream-of-the-orient-or-the-peri-gustave-moreau.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-253\" width=\"591\" height=\"894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/dream-of-the-orient-or-the-peri-gustave-moreau.jpg 595w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/dream-of-the-orient-or-the-peri-gustave-moreau-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><figcaption><em> \u201cDream of the Orient of the Peri\u201d (1826-98) <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-very-light-gray-background-color\">\tTwo pieces that I appreciate are the ornately decorated \u201cDream of the Orient of the Peri\u201d (1826-98), and \u201cThe Fiancee of the Night\u201d (1892).
