His earlier works were mostly abstract, and he gained success from this. However, Guston decided that abstract life wasn\u2019t for him, so he abandoned it to the dismay of many. Gustons later works however became why he was so well remembered. Some recurring themes they included were imagery such as the hooded Klansmen, Richard Nixon, smoldering cigarettes, and huge eyeballs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/cri_000000151466-1024x906.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-299\" width=\"594\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/cri_000000151466-1024x906.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/cri_000000151466-300x265.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/cri_000000151466-768x679.jpg 768w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/cri_000000151466.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><figcaption><em> \u201dGladiators\u201d (1940) <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-medium-font-size has-very-light-gray-background-color\">\tAn early career piece would be \u201dGladiators\u201d (1940). The piece flaunts abstract and shows a preview to how his later pop pieces would look a little like. Guston put a confusing amount of bandages onto the figure however it remains true to his style as it includes key characteristics of his art, the cigarette, and the large eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/large.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-301\" width=\"595\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/large.jpg 640w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/terencezhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9750\/2019\/11\/large-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><figcaption><em> \u201cCity Limits\u201d (1969) <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-medium-font-size has-very-light-gray-background-color\">\tOne of the many KKK paintings that Guston made was \u201cCity Limits\u201d (1969).
