Hi my name is Tessa…

I’m currently enrolled at Capilano University in the legal studies program.  I graduated with honors from Sentinel Secondary School last year. Adjusting to university has been a challenge but I’m coping with the expectations and learning about a variety of subjects. The main difference between university and high school is that I have a choice about which courses I take and when I take them. This gives me more freedom and variety that I didn’t experience with high school.

When I was younger I went to a Catholic school called St. Edmunds. We learned a lot about public speaking and this developed into competing in public speaking contests and doing school plays. I loved doing public speaking contests! I would go on the stage and have to perform a piece of poetry or a bible verse. By doing these competitions I learned how to stand when I’m talking and how to project my voice.

I started playing ice hockey when I was three years old and have loved it ever since. My love for hockey has developed into me coaching young children and becoming a skating instructor for all ages. Teaching children how to play hockey and skate has taught me how to be a part of a team and how to be responsible. My upbringing in Catholic school and public speaking experience has helped me with teaching. Talking loud so that you can be heard on the ice is essential.

Although I love hockey my true passion is law. After I graduate from Capilano University with a Paralegal Bachelor, I hope to start working in a law office. Another goal of mine is to attend law school with the hopes of becoming an international human rights lawyer. My love for law started at a young age because of my mother’s addiction to crime shows. This instilled an admiration for the law and the way lawyers help and defend people.  Throughout the next couple of years I read a lot of crime novels and watched the crime shows along with my mother. When I got to high school I was elated to find out that they offered a law class and I registered for it. In that law class I learned about the Canadian legal system and how to interpret the law.

I love to read and have been an avid reader since a young age. My favourite genre is epic poetry. They used to do summer reading marathons at the public library when I was younger. The library would give out prizes for the child that read the most books by the end of the summer, and I, being a highly competitive person, always wanted to win. This is where my passion for reading started and spurred me to keep reading as I grew up.
