Barbara Stauffacher Solomon

Barbara Stauffacher Solomon (1928-present) was an American landscape artist and graphic designer. She was a fine artist and ballet dancer before she decided to pursue graphic design. She decided to move to Switzerland and study graphic design after her husband passed away, leaving her alone with a child and barely any money.

In Switzerland, she studied under Herb Lubalin, who was a prominent graphic designer and type designer during this time. During the program, she reported that she didn’t think of anything creative or new but drew inspiration from existing work. She followed everything Lubalin said and only began to find her voice after starting her career as a graphic designer.

She soon realized she enjoyed doing large-scale designs and said it came naturally to her. She would start with a line, and the rest would happen on its own. Her hidden talent for super graphics is what made her art stand out.
