“Awareness can Save the Earth” by Fulvio G.m. || Italy

“Awareness can Save the Earth” by Fulvio G.m., featured by World Wildlife Fund, utilizes the Gestalt Principle of Closure. This principle relies on the brain filling in any gaps presented in an image. This is demonstrated in  G.m.’s illustration of a penguin, as despite it beginning to melt halfway down the page, the brain recognizes the silhouette of feet and is able to form the whole image of a penguin. This technique lets the penguin begin to blend with the background, creating an image where the penguin isn’t “whole” and complementing the theme of global warming. The dripping effect illustrated at the penguin’s torso suggests a theme of melting, specifically the melting of the ice caps in Antarctica. Combining the theme of melting directly on the penguin helps simplify the composition of the image, and acts as a powerful poster on climate awareness.
