{"id":49,"date":"2020-09-29T18:29:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-29T18:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/yunhu\/?p=49"},"modified":"2020-10-14T03:09:58","modified_gmt":"2020-10-14T03:09:58","slug":"survey-i-indus-river-valley-civilization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/yunhu\/2020\/09\/29\/survey-i-indus-river-valley-civilization\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey I: Indus river valley civilization"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ancient civilization of the Harappans and their oddly modern cities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>lasting from 3300 &#8211; 1300 BCE, the Harappan civilization was one of the first of its kind to make revolutionary inventions and advancements in all kinds of technology, especially land planning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hierarchy-based height planning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>located in Punjab, Pakistan, the remnants of an ancient city sits still, serving as evidence of the once-thriving civilization. The Harappans used an innovative grid-style planning layout for their entire city and put the important buildings such as granaries and assembly halls a little higher than ground level (artificial hills!) to avoid flooding. the lower cities were the residential area, neatly laid out in rows, connected at all the corners in right-angles (just like a modern residential area).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/yunhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11633\/2020\/09\/mohenjo-daro-ruins-285685-sw.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/yunhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11633\/2020\/09\/mohenjo-daro-ruins-285685-sw.jpg 800w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/yunhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11633\/2020\/09\/mohenjo-daro-ruins-285685-sw-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eportfolios.capilanou.ca\/yunhu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11633\/2020\/09\/mohenjo-daro-ruins-285685-sw-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><figcaption>example of grid-style layout of buildings<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Drainage and residential areas <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They used lots of clever tactics and technology to avoid flooding. for example, the city walls were built really high, and the walls sectioned off different parts of the city. every single street had connected to one big drainage system. Even every single house had its own &#8220;plumbing&#8221; with built-in bathrooms and wells that connect to the large drainage system for the whole city (yay sanitation!). It is about 150 ft x 75 ft x 15 ft. The building was made so that it was possible to fill it from the outside, and had excellent ventilation. The materials they used lasted thousands of years, and the town was set in a location with a nice habitable climate, near accessible water sources.
