Allan Fleming: Canada’s First Design Guru

Often known as Canada’s first design guru, Allan Fleming was a key designer in bringing Modernism to the country. He’s most well-known for his logo for the Canadian National Railway, or CN, which was acclaimed as one of the top 50 corporate logos at one point.

His first breaking point as a designer was the work he had done for Cooper & Beatty Typesetters (C&B), which resulted in international recognition, notably from huge design firms such as AIGA and New York Art Directors Club. Some of Fleming’s advertisements for C&B were focused on the history and practice of typography. He contributed not only to its design but the writing for those as well.

It’s clear that Fleming’s keenness for typography not only stands out as merely loving to draw letterforms and calligraphy but knowing how to incorporate these skills into ads which often added a ‘funny and flashy’ tone, attracting many of the audience.
